Needful Things…

Cake making.

I have always enjoyed baking. Not so much cooking, but baking. I’m better at baking than cooking, i guess. The normal malay dishes i can cook, but i guess i can’t beat my mom or MIL at it (how to contend? Cooking is their livelihood!) My mom loves my pasta though, especially my aglio olio. Actually she wouldn’t eat any other pasta dishes except the ones I cook.

Back to baking. Be it cookies, muffins or cakes, every attempt is like an adventure and gives me some cheap thrill. You never know whether your creation is a success or a flop. For me, the quality of my bakes are not quite as consistent as I’d like it to be.  My all-time favourite is brownies and although I know the recipe and procedure like the back of my hand, each time i bake it, something is bound to be different. I believe even mood affects the quality of the bake.

I don’t mean to brag, but i guess i JUST HAVE TO. :P  I must say i do make a mean brownie. I have fans in FHSS who crave for ‘em, and whenever there’s a potluck of some kind, i bring a few trays to school. Sad to say, some people even remember me only by my brownies. (Somehow that sounds a bit obscene.) And whenever i bake it just for fun, i do bring it for my ‘fans’ namely A. Tan and co.

See how I have digressed. I intended to talk about my latest baking craze and I’ve gone way off.

My favourite thing to bake these days is Kek Kukus. (Steamed fruit cake). Should it even be called baking?

My mother-in-law is CRAZY about steamed fruit cake. You can call her a Kek Kukus Conoisseur. What makes me happy is that she thinks my kek kukus is the best she’s tasted. I baked two batches for hari raya the other day, and it was gone within a week. She asked me to make it again, and i finally did on Saturday. Boy was she happy. Within a few hours after it was ready, half the tray was gone!

Today, we went to visit a cousin’s place in Simei and according to my relatives, her kek kukus is to-die-for. In the spirit of R&D, i made a beeline for it as soon as it was served. I passed the plate to my mom and mom-in-law and awaited her feedback. With some form of insiduous signal, she somehow relayed to me that mine is better.

I tell you, getting that kind of recognition from your own mom is one thing, but from your mother-in-law, EVEN BETTER.

Why were my relatives raving and ranting about it? It did not even look like fruit cake. More like…dodol. It tasted like dodol.

Sure enough, in the car, my MIL re-affirmed her sentiment. She said my cousin’s cake can’t beat mine. Wow. Was i happy or what? The 1 hour i spent mixing the batter, and the 4 hours of steaming certainly was worth it.

What’s left of the kek kukus? A third of the tray. :)

Room for One

I want a room of my own. A place to rave and rant about just me. This blog  is for my babygirl, so i shouldn’t be talking about myself there.

Also, i wanted to see if wordpress is better than blogger. At least it looks it. If it is indeed better, i shall import ooyah’s site here.

Yeah, it looks better already…
